A recall has been issued for a popular cabinet from Swedish furniture giant IKEA over safety concerns.

Customers who have purchased the Hemnes bookcase or cabinet are advised to check their product labels after finding out that shelves can shrink and move in a dry indoor climate.

Failure to do so could cause the shelves to collapse or objects to fall from the shelves, which could result in serious injury.

IKEA recalled its Hemnes solid wood bookcase and glass doors (pictured) sold between 2010 and 2017 in stores across Australia

Affected products include Hemnes solid wood bookcase and glass cabinets with movable shelves in various sizes and colors.

The products were sold in IKEA stores across Australia between 2010 and 2017.

Homeowners are encouraged to check the product label for time stamps between 04-01-2010 and 04-01-2017 to see if they own an affected model.

The defect can be corrected by a simple repair with customers encouraged to contact IKEA.

The furniture giant will provide free shelf support pins along with instructions on how to install them, to keep shelves and items in place.
