Nokia launches next-generation OTN architecture for wholesale services

Nokia has announced a wide range of upgrades for its next-generation packet-optical transport network (P-OTN) solutions needed by CSPs offering wholesale services.

Nokia says upgrades to its 1830 PSS-x solutions include doubling switching capacity to 48TB/s, new service engine-based Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) uplinks fifth-generation photonics from Nokia (PSE-V) and expand the range of wholesale service options with new client interfaces supporting 400GE service transport and a wide range of hardware and software isolation features for slicing of the network.

According to Omdia, Practice Leader for Transport Networks, Ian Redpath, consistent port bandwidth has increased by 49% to 227 Mbps in 2021, providing communications service providers with significant opportunities to offer new services. and increase their income through the provision of wholesale services. The wholesale business model can support deterministic end-to-end services across both traditional services and new segments such as mobile network slicing and backhaul, data center interconnection, wholesale for retail CSPs and business customers, smart grids, and residential broadband backhaul, all of which bring their own requirements for speed, latency, availability, and security.

Nokia says service providers must be able to easily scale capacity and support a wide range of existing and emerging protocols, while delivering guaranteed performance and service-level security over a shared network infrastructure. . OTN uses a digital wrapper to encapsulate TDM and packet services, providing a robust and efficient transport protocol ensuring strict isolation between different users on a common infrastructure. This proven optical transport technology helps CSPs scale their networks with more capacity and new service options, while ensuring the ability to meet the stringent SLAs demanded by end users.

James Watt, Head of Nokia’s Optical Networks Division, said, “We are delighted to offer advanced capacity scaling and extended service offerings to our more than 250 1830 PSS-x customers, while enabling new service capabilities across the wholesale CSP market. Our new upgrades provide comprehensive options for flexible scaling of OTN switch fabric capacity, support higher-speed line interfaces, deliver new wholesale services, and enable tight isolation traffic, all essential features for a composable and scalable network.

OTN provides unified networking technology to support a wide range of TDM and packet services and protocols such as Ethernet, Fiber Channel and SONET/SDH, with deterministic bandwidth and management and monitoring capabilities end-to-end, and non-blocking bandwidth efficiency. switching to maximize the use of WDM uplinks between nodes, the company said.

Nokia says it continues to lead the industry in expanding the capabilities of its 1830 PSS-x P-OTN solution portfolio for metro, regional and long-haul core networks, including:

  • Doubling the non-blocking switching capacity, up to 4 TB/s in the PSS-8x, 12 TB/s in the PSS-12x and up to 48 TB/s in the PSS-24x
  • Support for new WDM uplinks based on Nokia’s fifth-generation Photonics Service Engines, including 90 Gbaud Super Coherent Optics (PSE-V) and 400 G Pluggable Digital Coherent Optics (PSE-Vc)
  • Expand the range of wholesale service options with new client interfaces supporting 400GE service transport and a wide range of hardware and software isolation features for network slicing

Jan Flemming Henriksen, Head of Optics at Global Connect, said: “By using OTN switching, we are able to offer our customers high capacity 400GE DCI services, while improving our ability to support our classic low-capacity services in the future, with new high-availability options. , increasing service reliability.

Wilfrid Puyo, Optical Transport Product Manager at Swisscom, said: “Nokia’s OTN architecture and WaveSuite automation tools are helping us to efficiently provision existing 100MB links in large numbers, and soon expand them to 400 GB to meet the growing traffic demand for our converged fixed-mobile networks, while ensuring our customers get the level of service they demand with relative ease.

Nokia added that these new capability enhancements to the 1830 PSS-x portfolio interoperate seamlessly with the compact 1830 ONE and 1830 PSD solutions to enable service providers to deliver end-to-end high-capacity services from the metro/periphery to to national and global hearts. networks. Together, Nokia’s comprehensive portfolio of scalable, application-optimized P-OTN solutions deliver a complete, flexible and efficient network ready to deliver any service now and in the future.
